Compared to reinforced concrete and masonry structures, unreinforced concrete structures also have very high compressive strength, but their resistance to bending and tensile loads is relatively low. The incorporation of reinforcement mesh in concrete and masonry structures gives them very high resistance to bending and tensile loads. Reinforcement mesh can be woven or welded on site from reinforcement bars or purchased as ready-made mesh sheets.

The installation of mesh in concrete must be done very carefully, as any errors will cause the reinforcement to rust, making any repairs after the concrete has hardened very difficult, which will also adversely affect the lifespan of the building. It is important to ensure that there is a distance of at least 1.5 cm between the steel reinforcement and the concrete. If the distance is smaller, the reinforcement will start to rust, affected by the moisture and humidity in the concrete, which can reduce the diameter of the reinforcement bars by one millimeter over the course of a year. In Latvian weather conditions, this rusting process is significantly accelerated by the freezing and thawing cycles in winter.
