Decorative bricks are not the cheapest finishing material, but they pay off in the long run. And after all, we build houses for a long time. A brick wall will last more than a hundred years, provided that the house is built correctly. On the other hand, decorative plaster needs to be refreshed every 10-15 years to look good. Decorative bricks are a natural, durable, and fireproof material.

How to clean brick walls?

If necessary, brick walls are usually cleaned using chemical agents based on hydrochloric acid solution.

About mortar joints

In this case, two methods can be recommended. In the case of the first, traditional method, colored mortar is applied to the full joint. A cheaper but less convenient method is when, when laying with regular cement/sand mortar, the joint is not filled to a depth of about 10-20 mm. In this case, the unfilled joints are filled (covered) with colored mortar after the completion of the masonry work. According to the technical specifications of the masonry work, the horizontal joint of the brickwork should be 10-12 mm thick, and the vertical joint should be 8-10 mm thick. To achieve a greater decorative effect for the finishing wall, the external joints are filled, forming various shapes of external joints. It should be remembered that the wall should be cleaned immediately after jointing, before the mortar binding process begins, with a clean cloth or brush to remove mortar and cement stains. In this case, special attention should be paid to the amount of mortar dosage in the masonry joints when laying decorative bricks with a "sharp" surface structure. A mortar-covered and hardened "sharp" structure is practically uncleanable.

It is advisable to moisten the bricks with clean water before starting the masonry work. This helps to prolong the brick's absorption time (especially at high external air temperatures), slightly blocks the brick's capillaries, preventing water from being absorbed from the mortar during the brick's absorption process. Thus, the designed compressive strength (grade) of the mortar is achieved after complete hardening (28 days) of the mortar. Moistening the decorative bricks reduces the absorption of free lime in Portland cement through the brick's capillaries, resulting in the formation of white spots on the facade surface.
