Tikkurila Helmi Primer Undercoat Matt

Water-borne acrylic primer.

RECOMMENDED USES

Suitable for furniture, cabinets, doors, window sashes, skirting boards, radiators, sheet metal stoves, etc.

PRODUCT FEATURES

For interior painting of wooden, wood fiberboard, chipboard and metal surfaces. Also suitable for repainting surfaces previously coated with an alkyd or acid-curing paint. Not suitable for repainting of surfaces painted with nitrocellulose lacquer.

• Base paints: A BASE
• Colour Shades Color cards: Symphony Color System, Feel the Color, Feel the Color 2020. Light shades can be tinted in Tikkurila colors.
• Gloss: Matt.
• Application method: Brush, roller or spray. Airless spraying – nozzle 0.013"–0.015" – thinning 0–5% by volume
• Drying time: Touch-dry after approx. 1 hour. Recoatable with Helmi primer after approximately 2 hours. Recoatable with Helmi Pintamaali after approximately 5 hours.
• Density (kg/l): Approx. 1.3 kg/l, ISO 2811
• Volume solids (%): 35
• Storage: Protect from frost.

Application conditions

The surface to be painted must be dry, the ambient temperature at least +8 °C and the relative humidity of air below 80%. A relatively low temperature (approx. +15 °C) and high humidity (50–70% RH) prolong the open time of the paint, making application easier.

Surface preparation

Carefully remove any dirt and dust from new surfaces for ensuring the best possible adhesion.

Wash previously painted or lacquered surfaces with Maalipesu detergent and rinse carefully with water. Let dry. Remove any loose paint or lacquer with a scraper and sand the entire surface. Remove the sanding dust. If necessary, apply the Presto Pikasilote filler to uneven areas and sand the filled areas. Remove the sanding dust.

Painting

Stir Helmi Pohjamaali primer well before use and thin with water, if necessary. Apply by brush, roller, paint pad or spray. On large surfaces, it is recommended to first apply the paint with a furniture paint roller, for example, and then level the coat with a brush.

We recommend the use of synthetic brushes with multi-branched bristles.
For absorbent porous surfaces, priming using a primer thinned 5–10% with water followed by intermediate sanding is recommended. After two hours, paint the surface with an unthinned primer. The surface can be recoated with Helmi finishing paint after five hours.

Cleaning of tools

Remove excess paint/ lacquer from tools and clean with water. Clean tools with water. Tikkurila Pensselipesu Tool Cleaner is recommended to remove slightly hardened paint. Remove excess paint from tools. Clean tools with water. Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool Cleaner) is recommended to be used to remove a bit hardened paint.

Maintenance instructions

If needed, after approx. 1 month from painting, at the earliest:

Clean the surface with a neutral (pH 6–8) dish washing solution and a soft brush, sponge or cleaning cloth. Clean very dirty surfaces with a mild alkaline (pH 8–10) detergent solution and a cloth or sponge, for example. Rinse the surface thoroughly.

After the surface treatment, the surfaces must be handled with care for a few weeks, as the product will reach its final hardness and durability in about one month under normal conditions. If the surfaces need cleaning soon after the surface treatment, clean them lightly by using a soft brush or a damp cloth.
